This catalogue book publishes - besides some paintings and drawings from different private and museum collections - one of the most important private collections of prints from James Ensor, who is considered as the precursor of Expressionism and Surrealism. This unpublished collection, containing nearly 40 handcoloured etchings, is concentrated on very early proofs. The b/w etchings, reproduced in 3 colours, give the best impression of Ensor's prints so far.
Extensive texts about the importance of the prints within his œuvre and about special subjects like "Masks and death" or "The seven deadly sins" make the publication to an important contribution for the Ensor research.
