Standing Vishnu

Khmer
Standing Vishnu
Pre-Angkor period
8th century, Kompong Preah style
grey sandstone, height 54 cm

Lit.:
La espiritualidad del vacío, Fundación Bancaja, Valencia 2001, p. 154-157 ill.
Heiner Hachmeister (ed.), Khmer - Meisterwerke/Masterpieces, Münster 2002, p. 34ff. ill.

The classic cylindrical mitre rests elegantly on Vishnu's forehead, above his wide and well-modelled face.
The powerful back, strong enough to hold the weight of four arms, helps to accentuate the sense of the hieratic presence emanating from this sculpture which, nonetheless, is quite small.
The figure is dressed in a sampot tied at the waist with a central knot that falls to the ankles and is marked by two folds below the knees. The light fabric does not hide the full and vigorous forms of the young god, and furthermore emphasizes his sensuality to the point that we almost forget the statue's static frontal posture.

For the first time this catalogue book combines the sacred figurative stone sculptures of the Khmer from the 7th to
the 13th century with the abstract paintings of the american artist Mark Tobey from the fifties up to the seventies
of the 20th century. Although being totally different concerning style and authentic meaning, these works of art seem
to be related on the level of meditation and interpretation of space.
The Khmer sculptures of highest quality belonged to old european collections and are now published for the first time.
The sculptures are chronologically classified and presented in their artistic and religious meaning.

Six masterpieces of Khmer sculpture from two old european collections will be presented with several illustrations each
and detailed descriptions with hints on equivalent works. Five sculptures from the pre-angkorian period,
late 6th century to late 8th century, and one sculpture from the 11th century give an impression of the fascinating
mastership of the anonymous sculptors in old Cambodia who presented their former orderers, the high ranked nobles,
as gods and goddesses.
The texts comment the religious and historical background of Khmer art in relation to the illustrated sculptures.
